Cross Country: Running as One

Ms. Rebecca Emrich who leads our school's Cross Country team along with Mrs. Feitosa and Mr. Stephenson, recently reflected on her team's successes this season: "We see a lot of mindset growth in the kids that have run before, looking at setting realistic and individual goals for themselves and for the course. And because they already have a foundation there, they can really think about what is a meaningful progression for them,"

Troughout the 2024-2025 XC season, many athletes of various skill ranges were able to compete, encouraging and pushing each other to perform their best. Coming home with 5 trophies out of 5 total events at APAC, athletes showed a great sense of sportsmanship and positivity towards each other on the track. This large group of athletes willing to commit to this sports season have grown closer through travelling, competing together, and overall encouraging each other to run.

As the flu made its way through many XC athletes this season, respiratory illnesses served as a large obstacle to the runners. As pneumonia and other illnesses tampered with the athletes goals and running times, the athletes dealt with their own high expectations: "Always comparing where you want to be or where you were to where you are now and thinking, well, really you're running at a new normal until you are fully recovered." Despite these challenges, the athletes were able to persevere through and end the season on a high note.

Among all these hard working athletes, Madeline Payne (12) stood out, setting several new records for the season and the school. After transferring to SFS in 10th grade, she immediately caught the attention of coaches both within and outside of the school. Described as dedicated, talented, and extremely humble, Madeline Payne worked hard for her achievements despite her natural talent. "And after the runs, she is one of the most supportive members of the team. She was one of our captains this year for that reason, not just because she was our fastest, but because she was there modeling excellence to our students in several ways. She's really humble," Coach Emrich stated.

Throughout just this season, Madeline was able to set several new records for the Cross Country team. Despite having to give up the first place spot at KAIAC Championships to one of her best competitors, both runners are able to turn their rivalry into a positive competitiveness, encouraging and congratulating each other after the competition, pushing each other to be better.

Overall, the 2024-2025 Cross Country season served as an opportunity for athletes to grow closer to each other, and improve under a positively competitive environment.
