Mark graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a bachelors in Physical Education in 1975 and then got his Masters in Sports Medicine and his Teaching Certificate from Pepperdine University in Malibu, California in 1978.
Mark was the Assistant Swimming and Water Polo coach at Pepperdine University from 1975 to 1980 and then the Director of Aquatics at Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis, Oregon from 1980 to 2007. In his five years at Pepperdine, Mark also taught swimming classes for the Physical Education Department and for 10 of his 27 years at Osborn Aquatic Center, he coached the local high school swim at Crescent Valley High School.
Mark retired in 2007, but worked part time at Oregon State University, in Corvallis, Oregon as a swimming and water polo instructor in the Physical Activities Department until 2014, when he went to Seoul Foreign School in Seoul, South Korea as the Aquatics Director. Mark coached the varsity swim team at SFS for three years, from 2014-2017. (His wife, Laura, was an assistant high school and middle school swim coach along with working in the Sports Department).
